The Wine
From an esteemed husband and wife winemaking duo, the Bubbs + Pooley brand is Justin Bubb and Anna Pooley ‘side hustle’, although that rather downplays the craft behind these wines and the growers from where the fruit is sourced.
Coal River Pinot Noir sourced from three sustainable vineyards in the Coal River Valley. Hand-picked fruit with 20% whole bunches and a wild-yeast fermentation ensuring a gentle extraction over 20-25 days on skins. Following maturation for 10 months in a blend of concrete tulip (10%) and French oak puncheons (90%, 25% new oak), the wine is bottled unfined and vegan-friendly.
Cellared Says
Super slinky pinot noir from husband and wife team. Pretty PN, lifted fruit, light on its feet gaining complexity with spice and touch of undergrowth as all good Pinot should. Nice line to finish. Will cellar extremely well for 3-5 years and build to something quite delicious.
Wine Reviews
"Gee, this is a good Pinot Noir. Plenty of juicy cherry, a jasmine, rose oil and almost apricot perfume, a bit of spice and something a little earthy. It’s the feel of it, though, that really gets me in. It’s bright, but concentrated, with tight stony tannin, a cool ‘minerally’ aspect to its pure-feeling acidity, with a very long finish that pops with cherry, ripe raspberry, almond meal, and quite some fragrance. It’s sweetly fruited as a young wine, yes, though that structure is the thing. A curious thing to say, perhaps, its that it’s a fine Pinot Noir that sports something of an Italianate character. I love it. It’s touch and go for 96 points."
