Domaine Chandon de Briailles Savigny-Les-Beaune 1er cru lavieres Pinot Noir Burgundy 2019
Region: Burgundy
Sub Region: Gevrey-Chambertin
Variety: Pinot Noir
Country: France
Vintage: 2022
The Wine
Established in 1834, Chandon des Briailles boasts a commendable history and continues as a genuine family domaine to this day. The estate has been inherited by successive generations of the de Nicolay family, with the current custodians being the sibling duo, Count François de Nicolay and Claude.
Despite its notable heritage, it remains somewhat of an enigma in the wine industry. Those privy to its reputation recognize that Chandon des Briailles consistently produces wines of outstanding quality that are particularly beneficial to age.
Christian Knott, a fellow Australian, took over as Head Winemaker back in 2013 leading to a significant enhancement in quality. The 2020 vintage marks the last under his stewardship before he departed to focus on his own Domaine Dandelion which we highly rate. The recent solar vintages from 2018 onwards have shown the high calibre of this Domaine, biodynamic viticulture and hands off winemaking have made the recent vintages highly collectable. NOTE the big jump in pricing from 2018+
Cellared Says
You get hit by a waft of wild strawberry and thyme upon first swirl and sniff. This sets you up for a delightful wine, characterful, well balanced with layer up on layer of pinot complexity as it opens up. Cool fruit, fine minerally notes, svelte tannins. A great Burgundy punching way beyond its Appellation.
Reviews
Pretty floral nuances include those of peony, violet and lavender on the more elegant aromas of both red and dark currant along with spice wisps. There is evident minerality to the more sophisticated middle weight flavours that possess better delineation if not quite the same density before terminating in a youthfully austere finale. 90 Allen Meadows, Burghound.
Aromas of sweet berries, peonies and spices introduce the 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières, a medium to full-bodied, supple and enveloping wine that's broad and velvety, with melting tannins and an ample core of succulent fruit. 90-92 William Kelley, Wine Advocate.
